Focus: Hardware, UAV assembly, sensor integration, flight operations, and reliable data collection. Key Responsibilities 1. Drone Assembly & Platform Setup • Select and assemble a UAV frame compatible with a Jetson Nano (or Orin Nano) compute board. • Integrate: • Downward-facing global shutter camera • Multiple IMUs (e.g., BNO085, VN-100, MPU-6000) for experimentation • Power supply, ESCs, flight controller (PX4-based) • Vibration isolation mounts and wiring harness 2. Sensor Interfacing & Calibration • Integrate the camera and IMU to the Jetson platform via USB/CSI/I2C/SPI/UART. • Perform: • Camera intrinsics calibration (AprilGrid / Kalibr) • Camera–IMU extrinsics calibration • IMU noise characterisation (Allan variance) 3. Flight Software & Safety • Configure PX4 for manual and autonomous waypoint missions. • Develop routines for: • Takeoff → 150 m - 300 m altitude → fixed path → landing • Data logging (camera, IMU, timestamps, sync monitoring) • Implement safety checks: • Failsafes • Battery thresholds • Controlled descent 4. Data Collection Operations • Conduct repeated flights over the same area at different times of day. • Ensure: • Stable downward-facing imagery • Consistent overlap • Precise trajectory replication Deliverables (Role 1) • Fully assembled, airworthy UAV platform. • At least 6–10 usable datasets from repeated flights at 50 m - 300 m. • Calibration and flight documentation.
